The Brisbane Institute is an ideas marketplace, where anyone is welcome to attend seminars, policy briefings and conferences, join in the discussion and share their own ideas. The forums encourage a unique, informal learning network, which crosses the boundaries of traditional learning and business networking.  The driving force is reflected in a Charter, which embraces the value of learning through discussion and the most innovative tools of the information society.

The Brisbane Institute is a completely independent and non-partisan organisation. Funding is received from a cross section of Universities, Government departments, Corporations and individual members. Executive Director Professor Peter Spearritt looks after the day-to-day operations of the Institute.

The Brisbane Institute has published a number of articles on population growth in SEQ.

Sustainable Population Australia (SPA) was formed in 1988 by people who felt that the issue of population numbers was overlooked, or regarded as too contentious, by many of those striving to preserve Australia's ecological heritage.

SPA is an ecological group dedicated to preserving species' habitats globally and in Australia from the degradation caused by human population growth.  SPA works on many fronts to encourage informed public debate about how Australia and the world can achieve an ecologically sustainable population.

The Koala Action Group (KAG) is a community group working locally to help koalas in our unique Redland environment.  Members receive a bi-monthly newsletter with the latest information about koalas and other environmental topics. The activities KAG undertakes include tree planting for wildlife, field days and tree identification, advice on making properties wildlife friendly, wildlife ambulance work, and the annual koala phone-in survey to determine koala numbers in the Redland Shire.

The Wildlife Preservation Society of Queensland (WPSQ) is one of Queensland's oldest, largest and most respected conservation groups. Started in 1962 by naturalist David Fleay, poet Judith Wright, artist Kathleen MacArthur and publisher Brian Clouston, it is a strong force in conservation today. The object of the society is to preserve the fauna and flora of Australia by all lawful means.  WPSQ represents members' interests at local, state and national levels on all matters affecting wildlife and their habitats. Our Head Office in Brisbane is ideally located to access and influence state-wide legislation and planning decisions, and works in cooperation with its branches and other like-minded groups.  WPSQ have 24 branches throughout the State, with over 1200 members in Queensland and interstate. These branches consult with local councils, state government and their communities. This grass roots approach allows us to focus on actions which are achievable both as individuals and as a group.

Please visit as well the website of WPSQ Bayside Branch which is local in the Redland Shire.

Gold Coast and Hinterland Environment Council Assn. Inc. (GECKO) was founded in 1989 when representatives of 6 local conservation groups came together. They envisioned the organization working for the care, protection and conservation of the natural environment and the improvement of the built environment so that it becomes more ecologically sustainable. Gecko is represented on many government committees and participates in a number of public consultation processes. Some examples include the GCCC Environment Advisory Committee; the Settlement Advisory  Committee; the Airport Advisory Committee; the Gold Coast Harbours Vision 2020; and the Ecotourism Working Group.

Queensland Conservation Council is the peak body for the environment in Queensland and the leading advocate for environmental protection. QCC runs campaigns on a number of issues: sustainable rivers, climate change and our cool communities, save our bush/land use, Moreton Bay, livable communities and wildlife protection.  QCC can assist you in making your voice heard where it matters most - government, industry and the community.
